Band Of The Week: 2011 Wando HS Marching Band “Daedalus and Icarus: A Metamorphosis”

This weeks Band of the Week is a blast from the past: the 2011 Wando HS Marching Band, whose production “Daedalus and Icarus: A Metamorphosis” brought them to their 2nd BOA Grand National Finals appearance and their 7th SCBDA 5A State Championship in a row! A massive thank you to Tom Thomson for providing these photos from the 2011 BOA Atlanta Super Regional and show notes.

Wando’s 2011 production featured music from Dmitri Shostakovich, James Newton Howard, and Jay Bocook, who also served as the music arranger. The donor of these photos, Tom Thomson, provided us with this description of the show:

The show was called “Daedalus and Icarus,” and it told the story of the father/son duo discovering that they could escape captivity by flying out with wings. The young Icarus, of course, flies too close to the sun, so the wax on his wings melts and he falls into the sea and drowns. In the show, the entire trumpet section drowns with him.

Under legendary director Scott Rush, the 2011 Wando Band continued their rise to national prominence by making their 2nd appearance at the Bands Of America Grand National Finals, placing 12th overall. Their season also was highlighted by their 7th SCBDA 5A State title in 7 years, and a 6th place finish at the BOA Atlanta Super Regional where these photos were taken.

Thank you again to Tom for providing these photos! We would love to see more submissions from past years, so if you have photos you would like to share, make sure to reach out to us on any of our social media channels or through our contact form.
